Ten-step visual guide

Step-by-step instructions
1. Prepare the canvas
Place the canvas horizontally. If desired, lightly mark the center and the approximate bottom third where the fence and pumpkins will sit.
2. Paint the navy sky
Use the 3/4-inch flat brush to cover the canvas with navy blue. Work in loose horizontal and crisscross strokes. Let a little variation show instead of blending everything perfectly smooth. Let dry completely or use a hair dryer before adding the moon.
3. Add the golden moon
Trace a large circle with a plate or bowl. Fill it with golden yellow. While the paint is still slightly wet, add a few loose strokes of cream or white to suggest moon texture. Let the background dry completely.
4. Transfer the design
Use graphite paper or chalk to transfer the cat, fence, pumpkins, and bats. Keep the transfer lines light so they are easy to cover.
5. Paint the rustic fence
Fill the fence rails and posts with dark brown. Add only a few tan strokes following the direction of the wood. The streaks do not need to be straight or evenly spaced.
6. Paint the pumpkins
Fill both pumpkins with burnt orange. Add dark-brown curved lines to divide the sections, then place one golden or pale-orange highlight inside each section. Paint the stems dark brown.
7. Add the black cat
Fill the cat and curled tail with black. Use the smaller brush around the ears, whiskers, and tail curl. Two thin coats may be easier than one heavy coat.
8. Paint the bats
Fill the three bats with black. Keep them as clean, simple silhouettes; tiny wing details are unnecessary.
9. Add finishing texture
Paint a few additional cream strokes on the moon, tan streaks on the fence, and muted-purple grass marks near the lower corners. Strengthen any pumpkin highlights that disappeared as the paint dried.
10. Clean the edges
Use the neighboring base color to correct uneven areas. Deepen the cat and bats where needed, then stop before the painting becomes overly polished—the loose strokes are part of its charm.
Beginner painting tips
- Dry the background before transferring the outline.
- Use two thin coats for solid black and white areas.
- Rest your painting hand on a clean paper towel when adding small details.
- If a line becomes too thick, let it dry and repaint beside it with the base color.
- Your moon, pumpkins, and fence do not have to match the example perfectly.
Make it your own
Try a plum sky, a pale-blue moon, a white cat, or teal pumpkins. You can also reduce the design to one pumpkin or add a simple initial to a fence post.
