Easy Whimsical Teacup and Pink Rose Painting for Beginners

A warm cup of coffee, a happy pink rose, and a few minutes to create! This painting brings all three together. The light background and loose brushstrokes make it feel soft and calming, while the bright pink gives it just enough cheerfulness to stand out.

This tutorial is designed for beginners. You can use the included tracer, and your cup does not need to be perfectly symmetrical. In fact, the slightly wonky lines are what make this painting feel whimsical and hand painted.

What You Will Paint

We will begin with a creamy white background and a few pale pink and blue brush marks. Then we will add a simple white teacup and saucer, warm tan coffee, a bold doodle-style rose, and an airy border of leaves, buds, and tiny seed heads.

Supplies You Will Need

  • 11 by 14 inch canva
  • Acrylic paint in warm white, light pink, bright pink, pale blue, olive green, ochre or golden tan, tan, medium brown, and dark brown or soft black
  • Brushes: 1 inch flat brush, medium flat brush, small round brush, and liner brush
  • Cup of water, paper towels, and a paper plate or palette
  • Printed tracer, graphite transfer paper, and a pencil or pen

Use the colors you already own. The important contrast is a very light background with a joyful, brighter pink rose.

Step 1: Paint the Light Background

Cover the canvas with warm white. While it is slightly damp, use a mostly dry brush to add a few faint blush-pink and pale-blue strokes. Keep the center quiet and leave plenty of creamy white showing.

Step 1: painting the light cream background with faint pink and blue brushstrokes

Step 2: Draw In the Cup and Saucer

Transfer the cup and saucer outline after the background dries. Paint both shapes warm white. Add a few pale-blue shadow strokes along the right side, under the cup, and near the saucer edge. Add one or two pale-pink strokes for warmth.

Step 2: blocking in the white teacup and saucer shapes with pale blue shadow strokes

Step 3: Add Coffee and Loose Outlines

Paint the coffee a warm tan, following the oval rim. When the paint is dry, use a liner brush and dark brown or charcoal to trace the cup, handle, rim, and saucer. Let the line vary in thickness and wobble slightly. You can use a sharpie or black marker- just make sure your paint is completely dry or you will ruin your marker :)

Step 3: adding warm tan coffee and loose dark brown outlines around the cup and saucer

Step 4: Paint the Bright Pink Rose

Block in the rose with light pink. Add bold bubblegum and raspberry-pink strokes around the outer and lower petals. Paint three broad olive leaves, then add simple charcoal petal lines and loose outlines. Avoid overworking the center.

Step 5: Add the Botanical Border

Paint a few simple stems around the outer edges. Press and pull the brush to make olive leaves. Add bright-pink buds and flowers with short dabs, then dot on a few ochre seed heads. Keep the botanicals widely spaced.

Step 5: adding the botanical border with leaves, pink buds, and ochre seed heads

Step 6: Finish with a few Accents

Add a few faint pink and pale-blue dry-brush marks, several loose pink petal dabs, and any final charcoal accents the design needs. Step back before adding more. The open space is what keeps this painting light and calm.

Creative Friend, let this painting stay imperfect. You are not trying to make a factory-perfect teacup or a realistic rose. You are creating something cheerful with your own hand—and that is enough.

Printable Tracer

Use the full-page tracer below for reference, or print the four tiled pages at 100 percent for true 11 by 14 sizing: trim the page margins as needed, overlap the matching sections, tape them together, and transfer the assembled design.

Place graphite paper dark side down between the tracer and the dry canvas, then trace the main lines with a pencil or pen.

Make It Your Own

Change the rose to red, coral, purple, or your favorite color. Paint tea or hot chocolate in the cup, add a tiny spoon, or leave the border even simpler. You can also display it beside the fall coffee and pumpkin painting as part of this whimsical coffee series.

I hope this gives you a moment to slow down, breathe, and create. If you paint your own version, share it with me. I cannot wait to create with you!
